A LLANELLI side plagued by injuries and missing their Scarlets Academy players, who are currently on A team duty in the Celtic Cup, were outplayed by Merthyr, who retained their 100 per cent winning record.

The Ironmen opened the scoring on six minutes with a try for No. 8 Hemi Barnes.

That was followed by a touchdown for full-back Matthew Jarvis, who added both conversions as the champions moved back to share the lead at the top of the table.

Merthyr continued to dominate the game but struggled to convert their superiority into points.

But all that changed in the 33rd minute with a converted try for speedy former Ospreys winger Jay Baker.

It took less than two minutes following the restart for the home side to open their account with a try for centre Joe Roberts, while it wasn’t until the 70th minute that Merthyr claimed their bonus-point try, a second for Baker.

The second half saw Llanelli produce some entertaining open play but they were unable to narrow the gap to their visitors and still seek their first win of the season.

Llanelli make the short trip to unbeaten Llandovery on Saturday, while Merthyr are at home to Aberavon.

LLANELLI – Try: J Roberts; Con: A Sutton.

MERTHYR – Tries: H Barnes, M Jarvis, J Baker (2); Cons: M Jarvis (3).
