Probus Club The club met recently and the speaker Phil Cullen gave an excellent talk on the Gwendraeth Valley mining industry. Phil worked in the industry for almost 20 years. He commenced work at Cynheidre as a mechanical apprentice in 1973. After completing his apprenticeship he started a technician’s certificate and finally completed an honours course in mining mechanical engineering at the polytechnic in Pontypridd, which is now part of the University of South Wales. After the 1984-5 strike he was elected chairman of the National Union of Mineworkers at Cynheidre. He held this position until the closure of the mine in 1989. After the demise of the mining industry Phil took an Access to Law course at Swansea College before entering Swansea University to study law, graduating in 1996. Phil has written a number of books and articles on the coal industry of the Gwendraeth Valley and worked as a freelance legal researcher. The club members thoroughly enjoyed Phil’s talk.
