Bri­tish Le­gion Head­quar­ters Ev­ery Mon­day, Thurs­day, Satur­day and Sun­day there is coffee and bingo in the Royal Bri­tish Le­gion head­quar­ters in Burry Port at 8pm. Ad­mis­sion 50p. Last bingo books 7.50pm. Or­gan recital Fri­day at 7pm in Jerusalem Chapel. Huw Tregelles Wil­liams on the or­gan will be sup­ported by Cor Curiad. Tick­ets £7 each with tea and coffee to fol­low.

Lit­ter pick The Pem­brey and Burry Port Grab and Bag vol­un­teer lit­ter pick­ing group will be meet­ing in Burry Port at Seav­iew Ter­race car park, SN 444 007, on Satur­day at 10am un­til noon. All equip­ment is pro­vided but please be sure to bring a pair of gloves. As well as clean­ing up our lo­cal ar­eas, vol­un­teers can also sign up to re­ceive time cred­its. Ev­ery­one is wel­come but chil­dren un­der 16 must be ac­com­pa­nied by an adult. Ring 07971 131184. Gar­den club On Mon­day there is a meet­ing of the Pem­brey and Burry Port Gar­den­ing Club at 7pm in the Com­mu­nity Hall, Pem­brey. Helen War­ring­ton will give a talk on seeds and prop­a­ga­tion. Cost £1.50 for mem­bers and £2.50 for non-mem­bers at the door to in­clude a raf­fle ticket and re­fresh­ments. The gar­den club meets on the first Mon­day of the month ex­cept bank hol­i­days and De­cem­ber is the Christ­mas din­ner. Come and join us for an an­nual fee of only £5. Can­cer Care pink con­cert Pem­brey and Burry Port friends of Ten­ovus Can­cer Care are hold­ing their an­nual Pink Con­cert on Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 12, at 7pm in Bethel Chapel, Pem­brey, doors open 6.30pm. Ten­ovus Can­cer Care choirs will be per­form­ing along with Glan y Mor school choir, Sounds Orig­i­nal and the lovely voice of Abby Thomas. Spe­cial guest is Si­mon Holt from the Peony Breast Unit. Tick­ets £3 for adults and £1 for chil­dren avail­able on the door.

Probus Club The club met re­cently and the speaker Phil Cullen gave an ex­cel­lent talk on the Gwen­draeth Val­ley min­ing in­dus­try. Phil worked in the in­dus­try for al­most 20 years. He com­menced work at Cyn­hei­dre as a me­chan­i­cal apprentice in 1973. Af­ter com­plet­ing his ap­pren­tice­ship he started a tech­ni­cian’s cer­tifi­cate and fi­nally com­pleted an hon­ours course in min­ing me­chan­i­cal en­gi­neer­ing at the poly­tech­nic in Pon­typridd, which is now part of the Univer­sity of South Wales. Af­ter the 1984-5 strike he was elected chair­man of the National Union of Minework­ers at Cyn­hei­dre. He held this po­si­tion un­til the clo­sure of the mine in 1989. Af­ter the demise of the min­ing in­dus­try Phil took an Ac­cess to Law course at Swansea Col­lege be­fore en­ter­ing Swansea Univer­sity to study law, grad­u­at­ing in 1996. Phil has writ­ten a num­ber of books and ar­ti­cles on the coal in­dus­try of the Gwen­draeth Val­ley and worked as a free­lance le­gal re­searcher. The club mem­bers thor­oughly en­joyed Phil’s talk. A vote of thanks was given by John Jones. The next meet­ing is at the Ash­burn­ham Ho­tel on Oc­to­ber 3. Friends of Ten­ovus Can­cer Care The Pem­brey and Burry Port friends have started a Meet with Us group on the first Tues­day of the month from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in Pem­brey Church Hall, Ran­dell Square, Pem­brey. The next meet­ing is Oc­to­ber 2. Come along and meet our friends group for a cuppa, a chat and maybe join our vol­un­teer list and help us put the fun in fundrais­ing. Wed­nes­day, Oc­to­ber 24, at 10am the long walk group is go­ing to Llyn Llech Owain Coun­try Park near Cross Hands. There is Welsh con­ver­sa­tion ev­ery Fri­day af­ter­noon at 2pm.
