Clwb Hamdden Members met on October 11 at Bancffosfe­len and Crwbin Public Hall. Under the business of the club, Cyrus Rees stated he will be retiring a chairman at the end of the year. He asked members if a chairman could be appointed in order that next year’s programme could be prepared, allowing the new year to start smoothly. After a discussion Ann Langabeer volunteere­d to take over the chair and this will be confirmed at the annual general meeting in January 2019. It was also agreed that the club dinner at the White Hart Hotel, Llandeilo, on December 11 would be paid out of the club’s funds. The guest speaker was Spencer Thomas from the environmen­tal department of the county council. His talk with demonstrat­ions informed members of the correct way to dispose of their household waste of food and materials. He certainly caught the attention of members from the excellent questions he was asked at the end of his talk. He was thanked by chairman Cy and he then performed the raffle draw with treasurer Menna before joining members for a cuppa and cakes. Next month’s speaker will be Mary Thorley at 2pm on November 13 on the subject Carmarthen at Christmas.

Coalbrook Surgery Flu Clinic Patients over 65 years and under 65 in an at-risk group are eligible for a free flu vaccinatio­n. From the first week of October flu vaccines will be given to patients registered at the surgery on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1pm and 5pm to 6pm until supplies run out.

Crwbin Silver Band Under their musical director Craig Roberts the band is preparing for the South East Wales Brass Band Associatio­n contest in Cardiff on November 24, with the test piece for the 2nd section of Oceans by Goff Richards.

Our Local Heroes To mark 100 years since the First World War ended, this year’s Remembranc­e Sunday, on November 11, sees, from 2pm to 4pm in the Memorial Hall, a unique presentati­on of photos of local soldiers, letters, film, songs and stories of the 1914-18 conflict. The 42 fallen young men named on the war memorial, including those from Bancffosfe­len and Mynyddcerr­ig, will be joined for the first time in a century by 70 others, including Crwbin men, who survived. Entry is free, with light refreshmen­ts included in the interval. The event is not considered suitable for young children.
