Pembs grab amazing win

-

THERE was an amazing climax to the SB Williams Inter-League clash between Pembrokeshire League and Carmarthenshire League at Bridge Meadow in Haverfordwest in midweek.

With less than 10 minutes left it looked as if the Carmarthenshire side were ready to claim the three points, but in an extraordinary twist the visitors somehow managed to turn a 3-1 lead into a 4-3 defeat.

On a wet night the action was fast and furious from the word go, and after going close when an inswinging free-kick from Luke Hayward hit the bar, Pembrokeshire eventually took the lead in the 15th minute.

A two-man move involving Adam Hawkins and Iwan Izzard set up a chance for Justin Harding to break the deadlock, and although his initial shot was blocked he made no mistake when the ball fell to his feet off keeper Kyle Powney.

Within a minute the visitors were back on terms when Nathan Davies was left unmarked from a corner swung in by Felinfoel ace Tom Roberts. Bwlch centre-back Davies was able to pick his spot with his header to make it 1-1.

Soon afterwards Sam Wilson of Carmarthen Stars went close to giving Carmarthenshire the lead for the first time, curling his shot inches wide of the post.

And the home team were also denied when Adam Hawkins struck the woodwork.

Tom Roberts struck from 12 yards to edge the visitors ahead in the 40th minute.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half the visitors came under heavy pressure, with Luke Hawkins going close on three occasions. Wayne O’Sullivan also had a close-range shot blocked.

But the Carmarthenshire side weathered the storm, and in the 65th minute a flash of brilliance from striker Joel Beynon saw them double their advantage. The Pontarddulais Town striker cut in from the left and beat two defenders before drilling his shot past the keeper.

At this point it looked as if Carmarthenshire were heading for a win and there was no indication of the nightmare in store.

Substitute Jordan Griffiths cut the deficit in the 81st minute, and two minutes later the fightback was on when the referee pointed to the spot when Griffiths was tripped in the box by Trallwm defender Rhys Watson, and the penalty was converted by Justin Harding to make it 3-3.

The drama wasn’t over, and keeper Kyle Powney was left with his head in his hands when the ball crept over the line for the winner from a shot by Jordan Griffiths in the 92nd minute.

Carmarthenshire are bottom of the three-team table with no points from two defeats.

Pembrokeshire host the Swansea Senior League at Bridge Meadow tonight (7.45pm).
