TATA RALLY TO CLAIM VICTORY
TATA Steel made it back-to-back wins in the WRU National Championship but were made to fight all the way for their 27-22 victory at lowly Newbridge.
They trailed 16-15 at the turnaround but rallied in the second half to ensure they left with maximum points.
Left wing Amir Jiwa Walji crossed twice, with fellow wing Dan Howells and scrum-half Steff Davies also crossing.
Fly-half Callum Bricknell added two conversions and a penalty.
The win for sixth-placed Tata was their third of the season and also backed up their 57-17 triumph over Beddau the week before, which ended a run of four straight league losses.
Trebanos are one place below Tata in the table on try count after they suffered a 38-7 defeat at the hands of Bedlinog.
Rhys James scored twice for the hosts, with Rhys Walker and Rhys Davies also dotting down, while the latter also kicked four conversions and a penalty.
A penalty try completed the scoring for the Foxes.
Sam Davies got the Trebanos try, converted by Rhydian George, but it was scant consolation in what was their fifth defeat from eight matches.
Champions Pontypool returned to the summit with a 39-13 win over Maesteg Quins. They took advantage as Cardiff Metropolitan University crashed to a first defeat of the campaign at Narberth.
Flanker Scott Matthews turned in a man-of-the-match performance for Pooler with a try hat-trick, going over twice in the first half and once in the second.
Narberth helped knocked Met off their perch with a 16-11 victory, ending the students’ eight-match winning start to the campaign.
Narberth led 6-5 at the interval thanks to two Nick Gale penalties against a Shawn Howard try for the visitors.
Richard Rees went over for the home side after the break, with the try converted by Gale, who added another penalty.
Harry Johnston split the posts twice for Met to bag them a losing bonus point but could not save their unbeaten record.
Pooler, still with their 100 per cent record intact, have 39 points. They are two points clear of Met, while they also have a game in hand.
Newcastle Emlyn were beaten 4119 at Beddau and are now bottom. Ystrad Rhondda thumped Rhydyfelin 51-0.
