Greatrex unleashes star as Emitom lights up Ffos Las
WARREN Greatrex unleashed a potential star of the National Hunt scene when Emitom made a winning debut over hurdles at Ffos Las on Friday.
The four-year-old had created a favourable impression when winning two bumpers at Warwick and Ascot, and built on that with a comfortable defeat of Lisnagar Oscar at the Gwendraeth Valley track.
Emitom was brought into contention early in the home straight, took over at the second-last obstacle and sauntered clear in the hands of Gavin Sheehan to record a hugely impressive five-length success.
“He’s a good one, he was only in second gear,” said Greatrex.
“He’s a delight to train, he’s very laid back and he’s got so much talent.
“He jumped well and he has the world at his feet.”
It was a successful afternoon in West Wales for both Greatrex and Sheehan, with the duo going on to record a double as Penn Lane took the Walters Group Handicap Hurdle, the richest race on the card worth more than £7,000 to the winner.
The 5-2 favourite was forced to battle as he recovered from making a mistake at the final hurdle before rallying to beat Flashjack on the run-in.
There was also a close finish in the novices’ handicap chase, with Air Navigator holding on gamely to see off Sir Egbert despite jockey Ciaran Gethings dropping his reins close to the finish.
