PRICE IS RIGHT IN BURTON 10K

A TEAM of three men represente­d Sarn Helen Running Club in the annual Tata Steel Richard Burton 10k in Port Talbot.

The race, staged on a relatively flat course, is one of the oldest events of its kind in Wales and drew a large crowd of more than 1,500 runners.

First to finish in the Sarn Helen vest was Sion Price, who covered the distance in a time of 34 minutes 34 seconds to claim a superb 12th place.

David Thomas ran a time of 51:29 and veteran Graham Penn clocked 1:04:12.

Penn then travelled to Bexhill-onSea in East Sussex to take part in the Poppy Half Marathon. He ran in full World War One uniform, including cap and boots, and finished in an official time of 3:01:17.

Emma Gray and Helen Willoughby travelled to Dorset to take on the darkness in the White Star Runnings Night Half Marathon.

The event covers both open and woodland trails which had to be navigated in darkness with only head torches for guidance.

Both women claimed personal bests, with Willoughby finishing 5th F50 in a time of 2:07:18, while Gray crossed the line in 3:13:10.

Daniel Hooper claimed overall victory at the Llyn y Fan Fell Race. He won by just 12 seconds with a finishing time of 54:37 to claim his firstplace prize of a giant marrow.

Calvin Williams covered the 5.5 miles in 1:07:06 to finish 2nd M50.

Jane Holmes was the only Sarn Helen runner present at the Winter 10-mile Wales event organised by the Tough Running team in Afan Forest Park and she completed the hilly trail course in 2:18:57, placing 11th in her category.

More than 500 runners were drawn to the trails of Brechfa Forest. The largest crowd was seen in the halfmarath­on distance which included almost 2,000 feet of climbing and was won by Samuel Gregory of Aberdare in 1:28:30 ahead of Lowri Morgan. Kevin Hughes of Sarn Helen finished 12th overall and was 2nd M40 in 1:44:07.

Pamela Carter placed 10th F35 in 2:32:37.

There were two Sarn Helen representa­tives in the 10k out and back race, with Lyn Rees winning the M65 class and Jane Holmes finishing a comfortabl­e ninth in her class. Rees ran a time of 1:18:55 and Holmes finished in 1:22:59.

In the Elan Valley 10-mile race, Caryl Wyn Davies maintained her fine form as she finished in 1:10:50, placing 2nd lady overall.

Michael Taylor ran 1:16:47 and David Thomas completed in 1:24:36. Carmarthen Quins Under-13s have gained sponsorshi­p from Carmarthen businesses Elite Scaffoldin­g and Eagle Accountanc­y. The players have all had new hoodies as a result. The young Quins played at Pontyberem and came away with a 57-40 victory. Men of the match were Jesse and Gilbert. Kevin Hughes, the first Sarn Helen runner home in the Brechfa Half Marathon.
