Doing what it takes to get the game on —

JOHNSTOWN reached the last 16 of the West Wales Intermediate Cup for the first time in their history after knocking out Pontlliw 2-1 in a nailbiting third-round tie.

Although division one leaders Pontlliw started hot favourites to progress, they never looked like justifying the odds against a fired-up home team who won thanks to goals from Bradley Arnold and striker Richard Whalley.

It took 120 minutes and penalties to settle the outcome between Bwlch Rangers and visiting FC Clydach.

The tie finished 0-0 after extra time, with Bwlch eventually edging the penalty shootout 4-3.

Gorseinon Athletic are out of the competition, beaten 2-1 at home by Brynawel. Goals from Jack Middy and Gavin Challocombe earned the visitors a deserved win.

As for Loughor Rovers, Trallwm and Trostre Sports, their ties were postponed because of waterlogged ground and the trio will try again next Saturday.

The league programme also took a battering from the weather, and the only game played in the Premier division of the LTC Mobility Carmarthenshire League finished 1-1 between Evans & Williams and visiting Tumble United.

Both teams needed points for different reasons, and while neither managed a maximum haul, Tumble would probably have settled for a draw before the game.

Both goals were scored in the first half, and it was Tumble who broke the deadlock with a cracking goal from Matthew James in the 20th minute.

The home team battled back, grabbing an equaliser in the 35th minute through a somewhat scrappy goal from Cliff Davies.

And it was Evans & Williams who went closest to scoring a winner in the second half, which saw substitute and player-manager Neil Williams hit the post late on.

The referee blew the final whistle when Tumble United had a three-onone situation deep in the home half.

Kidwelly Town produced probably their best performance of the season to claim a hard-fought 3-2 win at Burry Port in a division one derby.

The difference between the teams were the goals scored by Kidwelly substitutes Liam Martin and David Thomas, while also on target was Rob Hammond.

Chris Hyde, with two goals, was the Llandovery Town hero in the 3-2 win at home to CK Swiss Valley. Fen Wilson also netted.

In the big game in division two, Drefach suffered only their second league defeat of the campaign when going down 5-2 in the away clash against leaders West End United.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, Drefach did threaten to fight back with goals from Roy Llewelyn and Chris Amos, but it wasn’t quite enough.

There is no stopping reserve division 3B leaders Drefach Reserves, who beat visiting Llangennech 2-1 thanks to goals from Obbina Anyadike and Dai Bunford.
