COUPLE ARE CONFIDENT OF BOARD GAME’S SUCCESS
WE all love testing our knowledge from time to time, but one Llanelli man and his girlfriend have decided to take it to the next level by creating their very own board game.
Ceri Price from Llanelli was travelling through South America with his girlfriend Natalie Podd, from London, in 2016 when the pair had the idea of coming up with their own trivia game, Confident?
Mr Price, aged 28, said: “We were in the Amazon jungle and I asked my girlfriend what she thought the population of Brazil was.
“She gave the answer between a range of numbers, which led us to more trivia questions, and we were guessing between ranges, which made us think ‘does this game exist?’ So we thought there was a gap in the market.
“We came back to the UK a year later and decided to test it, so we created prototypes, expanded it and play-tested it with family and friends, and people liked it.”
The couple came up with Confident? which sees players answering questions with different ranges of answers, with the aim being to try to get the correct answer within that range while also getting the smallest range of answers compared to their opponents.
They juggled creating the game while both working fulltime as management consultants, and they even created a spreadsheet with 1,000 thoughtprovoking questions.
“In May this year we thought ‘why not just go for it’ so we invested our own money and developed a design,” Mr Price, who went to Ysgol y Strade, added.
“Everyone has a little whiteboard so you’re all answering at the same time. You might have no idea what the answer is, but you’ll always have a chance.
“Questions include things like ‘How many sausage rolls does Greggs sell every week?’ or ‘the number of episodes of Friends that were made?’ so they’re thought-provoking and encourage problem-solving. There’s no waiting for your turn and you get more points the smaller your range.
“It’s much more interactive than others and we came up with all of the questions, which was hard. We had a spreadsheet of 1,000 questions which we narrowed down to about 200. It was a challenge writing them in a clear and concise way and then checking that they were all correct.”
After coming up with the designs and questions, the couple’s creation is now being sold on Amazon.
Mr Price added: “It feels great. The quality is great and people have already left very good feedback.
“Six months ago if someone had said this was going to happen I would have been very surprised. I’m really proud of it, and the turnaround in six months.”
