REES TO RESCUE AS UNITED FIGHT BACK

-

PENGELLI United climbed two places to 10th in the Premier division of the LTC Mobility Carmarthenshire League following a hard-fought 3-2 win at home to Pontarddulais Town.

After letting slip a 1-0 half-time to find themselves trailing 2-1 at one point in the second period, a couple of well-taken goals from Luke Rees eventually secured maximum points. Also on target was Ewan Lindsey. And in another tight contest, Killay made ground advantage count with a 2-1 win against Seaside. It was 2-0 at half-time with both the Killay goals scored by Ben Lynch.

The league programme was badly affected by the weather for the second week in a row, with only a handful of games being given the goahead.

In the only other game played in the top flight, four of the goals for Carmarthen Stars in their 5-1 away win against Pwll Athletic were shared between striker Sam Wilson and Rhys Lewis.

Thomas Harvey was the other player to find the back of the net.

In the fight for the division one title, Burry Port climbed above Ammanford Town Reserves and into second place in the table following a deserved 2-0 win against visiting Camford Sports.

The goals for Port were scored by Marty Bardsley and Wayne Williams.

After going behind early on, Penyfan United rallied and battled back to beat visiting Llandovery Town 3-2.

Curtis Price grabbed the winner for Penyfan, for whom Dan Anderson scored two of the goals, one of them a penalty.

Kidwelly Town proved too strong for visiting Caerbryn, Robert Hammond netting twice in a comfortable 4-1 win. There were also goals for Luke Fitzpatrick and Jordan Howells.

West End United continue to set the pace at the top of division two, extending their advantage over FC Carmarthen to five points after a 9-1 win at home to Carmarthen Town United.

There were hat-tricks for both Stewart Hemingway and Curtis Evans, plus goals for Leon Goddard, Charlie Weston and Nathan Lewis.

There were also maximum points for Llangennech, for whom Nathan Mcauley grabbed a hat-trick in the 8-2 win against visitors KRUF.

Carmarthen Stars’ Liam Lilley and Felinfoel’s’ Fillipo Defay.

Davey Lewis netted twice, and there were goals for Curtis Roberts, Wayne Phillips and Morgan Lewis.

In the only game to beat the weather in reserve division one, leaders Evans & Williams kept their 100 per cent record intact with a 6-2 win at home to Gorseinon Athletic Reserves.

But it wasn’t as easy as the scoreline might suggest.

Despite getting the better of the early exchanges it took the home team until the 40th minute to open their account through Alex Harries. He tapped in from a corner by Ben Williams and it was the only goal of the opening half.

Although the visitors equalised soon after the break, Evans & Williams Reserves eventually stamped their authority on the contest thanks to a Shane Price effort and a couple of goals from striker Max Borgessi. Late goals from substitute Liam Jones and Jaymee Challiner rounded off another solid performance.

In the first round of the Darch Cup, goals from Liam James, Joe Brown, Dan Price and Jack Yelland helped Llangennech Reserves edge a 4-3 win in the away tie against Pembrey Reserves.

And in the second round of the competition, Ken Igbagri scored five of the goals for Carmarthen Stars Reserves, who won their away tie against Felinfoel Reserves 9-0.

The remaining four goals were shared between Jake Smith, Jethro Smith, Steve Yellen and Liam Lilley.

In one of five ties to survive in the third round of the West Wales Intermediate Cup, Loughor Rovers were knocked out in disappointing fashion when beaten 8-0 at Carew.

Lloyd Hughes scored four of the goals. There was a hat-trick for Jordan Richards, plus a goal for Scott Fernie.

The ties between Seven Sisters and Trostre Sports, plus Trallwm against Giants Grave, were postponed for the second time, which means the venues will now be reversed as per the competition rules, meaning that Trostre and Giants Grave will be at home when they attempt to play the games this Saturday.

The draw has already been made for the fourth round of the competition, which will be played on February 2. Trostre or Seven Sisters head to Plough Colts, while the prize on offer for Trallwm if they see off Giants Grave is a home clash with Bwlch Rangers.

Johnstown will face either Mumbles Rangers or Ragged School.

On Saturday there are 12 ties scheduled in the Picton Sports-sponsored Senior Cup.

The competition is open to clubs in the first and second divisions. The top tie in the first round is the one between neighbours CK Swiss Valley and visitors Felinfoel. Although CK Swiss Valley won the league game 5-1 at the same ground in October, it is Felinfoel who go into the tie in better form, having claimed maximum points from their last two games, while the hosts have lost their last two.

Division one leaders Pontlliw start with a tricky tie at Pembrey in the first round.

The teams met at Pembrey on the opening day of the season and on that occasion Pembrey gave their opponents plenty to think about before eventually going down 3-1.

In other first-round ties, Drefach and Kidwelly Town can make ground advantage count against respective opponents Penllergaer and KRUF.

In one of three ties in the second round, there is an exciting encounter in prospect between division one rivals Camford Sports and visiting Johnstown.

Despite sitting below Camford in the league table, Johnstown will travel in the knowledge that they beat their opponents 4-0 at home on the opening day of the season.

Johnstown are also on a high after reaching the last 16 of the West Wales Intermediate Cup for the first time in their history.

In the remaining ties, Ammanford Town Reserves and FC Carmarthen are expected to win their away matches against Abergwili and CP Suburbs respectively.
