Toybox Appeal in need of urgent donations
ORGANISERS behind Carmarthenshire Council’s Christmas Toybox Appeal are in urgent need of donations after demand from families in need soared.
The donated gifts are distributed to families who unfortunately are unable to provide for their children, for a number of different reasons.
However, Nia Thomas who is running the appeal said the number of families nominated this year has rocketed.
She said: “We have seen more than 1,000 nominated families who are in need. That is 40% more than last year and we need many more toys in a short space of time.
“The toys we already have are now being distributed to families, but there is a massive shortfall this year and we are asking people to do all they can to help.
“We provide gifts for babies right the way up to 18.”
Ms Thomas, who works in the council’s education and children’s services department, added: “We generally say toys have to be new but we will take what we can so that these children have some presents to open on Christmas Day.
“We aim to give six gifts to each child.
“People have been so generous and given a lot so far, it is simply the number of families in need this year has meant we are still very short on toys.”
The appeal was due to officially end on December 10, but has now been extended in a bid to receive more toy donations.
Any residents wishing to donate are asked to keep gifts unwrapped to allow for easier sorting.
To make a difference to someone less fortunate this Christmas, toys can be donated to council officers in Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford.
However, people are asked to call Mrs Thomas due to the demand for toys and collection can be arranged by the council.
