YOU know Christmas is around the corner when theatres in West Wales start filling up with parents and children celebratin­g panto season.

Aladdin arrived at the Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen last week, brought to life by Jermin Production­s.

Playing to a packed audience for a Saturday afternoon showing, the cast of Aladdin wowed the crowd with high-energy performanc­es that provided huge laughs for adults and children alike.

As always with pantos, the plot isn’t really the most important thing. You know going in that Aladdin will win the heart of the Princess and that the evil villain will get his comeuppanc­e, but it’s the journey that gets us to that conclusion which decides how the audience will respond.

After a low-key start where we meet the villainous Abanazar, the Spirit of the Ring and Aladdin, the show really bursts into life with the introducti­on of the eponymous hero’s brother JJ, played by Adam Byard.

His relentless energy jolts the whole production into a more manic experience where the youngsters in the audience are really encouraged to get involved.
