Mikey takes top award

-

CARDIGAN ABC’s Mikey O’Sullivan triumphed after a rousing toe-to-toe encounter with Devon opponent Sonny Boyes in Baglan on Saturday.

Following a thrilling first round which saw both boys go on all-out attack, O’Sullivan discovered his jab in the second round and managed to control his space a bit more to set Boyes up for his dynamite left hook.

The Fishguard schoolboy eventually worked an opening and deposited Boyes flat on his back for a count of eight.

Although Boyes was able to resume, O’Sullivan proceeded to dominate the third en route to a unanimous points victory which earned him the boxer of the night trophy.

Victory was particularly sweet for the Cardigan team as O’Sullivan had been on the wrong end of a split decision against Boyes in Tiverton the previous month.

The Cardigan boxer had warmed up for the Baglan contest with a unanimous points victory over Rhys Jones of Tonteg at Penyrheol the previous week.

Later in the evening Cardigan ABC junior Ioan Croft picked up the boxer of the night award following a unanimous points victory over Byron Waterhouse (Trelewis ABC).

Although Waterhouse proved a strong, tough front-foot boxer who kept coming forward, the Crymych 17-year-old was in control throughout, maintaining a barrage of shots from both hands which would have stopped many opponents.
