LEWIS SUFFERS CHISNALL EXIT

-

JAMIE Lewis was left to rue missed chances as he crashed out of the PDC William Hill World Championship.

Lewis, the Cardigan-born star who is now based in Carmarthen, was beaten 4-0 by Dave Chisnall at London’s Alexandra Palace.

His exit followed that of Pontyberem’s Jonny Clayton, who was beaten by Belgium’s Dimitri van den Bergh in the second round.

Lewis caused a sensation last year when becoming the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals, and he made a bright start when taking a 2-0 lead in legs in the opening set.

But Chisnall roared back and a classy 76 levelled the set before a brilliant 10-dart break of throw gave him the opening stanza.

Again Lewis hit the front at the start of the second set, taking the first leg only to be hit by another rapidfire blow from Chisnall, who raced through the next three legs to move clear with an average of 105, with an 11-dart break doing the damage.

Lewis needed a number of big finishes just to keep himself alive and a brilliant 118 finish looked to have kick-started a comeback from 2-0 down in the third set.

And he capitalised when Chisnall missed eight for the set to level things up.

But the St Helens thrower kept his composure as Lewis missed four darts for the set and the 12th seed took advantage to move 3-0 up.

And Chisnall rattled off three of the last four legs to seal his return to the last eight.

In marching into the quarter-final for the second time in three years, the 38-year-old made it 7-0 in televised competitions over world number 29 Lewis.

“It felt easy up there. But I was playing well, I felt comfortable,” said Chisnall.

“I got up there and gave him two legs for nothing.

“But after that I was good, the doubles were good.”

But Chisnall bowed out at the lasteight stage when beaten 5-2 by Gary Anderson.

The Scot averaged 103.03 and hit 12 maximums as he powered to a 5-2 victory.
