Club claims Legge Award

CARMARTHEN Harriers Athletics Club picked up the Gilbert Legge Memorial Award for the fourth time in 2018 for Sportsmans­hip, Endeavour and Achievemen­t.

The other occasions were in 1985-86, 2005 and 2009. The award is annually presented to a competing club in the Gwent Cross Country League, which has now been re-named in memory of the late John Collins.

Carmarthen Harriers, also twice winners of the George Crump Memorial Award for top junior club, have been big supporters of the Gwent cross country league for a long time. It is one of the best cross-country grass roots events in South Wales and the South West of England and encourages athletes of all abilities to take part whatever their ability. It saw the club have a record number of youngsters compete across four matches in 2017 at Cardiff, Brecon, Pembrey and Bristol.

The league has visited Pembrey Country Park over the last three years, with the match hosted by the Harriers in conjunctio­n with Carmarthen­shire County Council. Welsh Athletics Road Relays Championsh­ips and the Welsh Cross-Country Championsh­ips are some of the other popular events to be held in West Wales annually.
