Saints back in fine style

-

A FIVEWEEK absence did not hamper Costcutter League division one leaders St Dogmaels as they gained a 2-1 win at Newcastle Emlyn.

The scoreline may suggest a close encounter, but the Teifi Estuary high-flyers were in control for most of the contest as they impressed in all areas, especially in defence where skipper Jason Williams led by example.

A misdirected back pass presented striker Peter Almond with a chance midway through the first half and the front-runner slotted home to put Saints ahead.

That’s how it remained until the final quarter when visiting leading marksman Louis Harding found Jack Thomas out wide and the winger left two wouldbe tacklers in his wake before squaring to Almond, who made no mistake from six yards.

Emlyn halved the deficit near the end when an attempted clearance by substitute Aaron Williams made contact with the referee and the ball fell kindly for Robbie Jenkins, who blasted it into the top corner of the net.

Heads were turned when the score filtered through from the Urdd Centre in Llangrannog where Crannog won 17-0 against bottom side Bargod Rangers.

Some years ago Rangers played at a higher level but things have changed – the Parc Puw club could muster only seven players at the weekend and questions were being posed as to future prospects.

For the coastal villagers, skipper Marc Davies, Rhys Davies and George Colven hit hat-tricks, Robbie Evans, Mike Glover and Steff Evans bagged a brace apiece, Huw Owen was on target and a visiting defender put through his own goal.

A good run of results for reigning champions Lampeter Town continued as they were 4-1 winners against Llanboidy at Cae Dandre.

After falling behind, the visitors bounced back with two Gethin Hunter strikes before the interval. Town dominated during the second period when substitute Scott Davies made it 3-0 and Marc Evans hit the fourth.

Cardigan Town put themselves in the right frame of mind for the visit of St Dogmaels this Saturday with a 3-0 win over Aberaeron Reserves at King George V Playing Field.

Owen Williams netted twice and Josh Mellor was also on target.

In round two of the Central Wales Cup, Llandysul and Ffostrasol made long treks into Powys where both were eliminated by opponents from the Mid Wales League. Llandysul went down 5-0 against Kerry, while Ffostrasol were beaten 3-0 by Hay St Mary’s.
