Busy time for en­durance ath­letes as ma­jor races loom

EN­DURANCE ath­letes from Dyfed schools are pre­par­ing for a busy fort­night which will see four area events held next week, be­fore the lead­ing fin­ish­ers head to the ma­jor district fix­ture in mid-Jan­uary.

The Dyfed Pri­mary Schools Cross Coun­try Cham­pi­onships re­turns to the United Coun­ties Show­ground in Nan­tyci at the be­gin­ning of April, but be­fore then the grounds of Oak­wood Park in Nar­berth are the venue for the 2019 Dyfed Sec­ondary Schools Cross Coun­try Cham­pi­onships.

It will fea­ture pupils from Bri­anne, Pem­brokeshire, Ceredi­gion and Llanelli schools. It takes place on Tues­day, Jan­uary 22, at 11am.

Each area, weather per­mit­ting, is due to hold their re­spec­tive area events over the next 10 days at Am­man­ford, Pem­brey, Llan­grannog and Haver­ford­west. The first 10 in each race will go for­ward to rep­re­sent their area in Pem­brokeshire.

Many of the top cross coun­try ath­letes in the district are ex­pected to fea­ture.

There will be eight races on the pro­gramme with the age groups be­gin­ning at Year 7 and is fol­lowed by Years 8/9, Years 10/11 and Years 12/13 (both boys and girls).

Af­ter the cham­pi­onships in Oak­wood, 12 ath­letes in each age group will be se­lected to com­pete for Dyfed in the Welsh Schools Cross Coun­try Cham­pi­onships at Pen­lan Arena Fields, Brecon Leisure Cen­tre, on Wed­nes­day, Fe­bru­ary 13, where they will be joined by teams from Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Glam­or­gan Val­leys, Powys, North East Wales, South East Wales and Eryri.
