Busy time for endurance athletes as major races loom
ENDURANCE athletes from Dyfed schools are preparing for a busy fortnight which will see four area events held next week, before the leading finishers head to the major district fixture in mid-January.
The Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships returns to the United Counties Showground in Nantyci at the beginning of April, but before then the grounds of Oakwood Park in Narberth are the venue for the 2019 Dyfed Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships.
It will feature pupils from Brianne, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Llanelli schools. It takes place on Tuesday, January 22, at 11am.
Each area, weather permitting, is due to hold their respective area events over the next 10 days at Ammanford, Pembrey, Llangrannog and Haverfordwest. The first 10 in each race will go forward to represent their area in Pembrokeshire.
Many of the top cross country athletes in the district are expected to feature.
There will be eight races on the programme with the age groups beginning at Year 7 and is followed by Years 8/9, Years 10/11 and Years 12/13 (both boys and girls).
After the championships in Oakwood, 12 athletes in each age group will be selected to compete for Dyfed in the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships at Penlan Arena Fields, Brecon Leisure Centre, on Wednesday, February 13, where they will be joined by teams from Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Glamorgan Valleys, Powys, North East Wales, South East Wales and Eryri.
