Reds fans have a new hero as ex-Swan makes debut

-

ANDY Hill believes that Llanelli Town have pulled off the biggest signing in Welsh Premier League history with the capture of Leon Britton.

The 36-year-old made more than 500 appearances for Swansea City in a phenomenal career before retiring after the club were relegated from the Premier League last season.

But Britton has decided to return to action in a bid to help Llanelli avoid relegation from the top flight.

The former midfielder made his Llanelli debut on Saturday as the Reds battled back to claim a 2-1 victory over Llandudno.

When asked if this is the biggest signing in the league’s history, Llanelli boss Hill said: “I would say yes. Leon is a Premier League footballer. I don’t know any other side that has done that. We’re just grateful to Leon for coming on board with us.

“We’ve still got a job to do on the pitch and that’s the main focus.

“First thing that jumps out is Leon is a born leader and something we need more of on the pitch.

“We need experience to guide us and Leon will bring that. All the players can’t wait to get going with him.”

Britton initially joined Swansea on loan in 2002 and became a Vetch Field hero as they successfully battled relegation from the Football League. He was signed by Brian Flynn on a permanent basis the following season and apart from a brief spell at Sheffield United, stayed with the club on their meteoric rise to the Premier League.

He became club captain and also had a spell as caretaker-manager following the departure of Paul Clement.

He joined Llanelli with the club sitting second bottom of the WPL, and he hopes his experience of relegation battles will prove useful at his new club.

“The task at hand is to help the team push up the table and I want to go back to enjoying football,” said Britton.

“The last couple of years at the Swans was difficult.

“I’m delighted to be here. I’m looking forward to working with Andy and the team.

“I’ve experienced relegation battles. They’re always tough but hopefully I can use the experience I have to try to help the team.”
