Flint’s M4 trip east pays off handsomely

- Olivia Tudor

BRIDGEND trainer John Flint, by his own admission, would not be a regular visitor to Ascot but last Sunday he ventured along the M4 to the Berkshire course and won a £25,000 prize with his chaser Eddiemaurice.

The eight-year-old was given a fine ride in the novices’ handicap chase over 2m 1f by jockey Jamie Moore and won by a head. It was one of the biggest wins of the trainer’s career and the news will please his many friends across South Wales.

Another week, another winner is certainly the motto that young conditional Welsh jockey Connor Brace goes by.

He has been travelling all over the country looking for winners. Last week he was rewarded at Wetherby when Ballyhome justified favouritism in a handicap hurdle for his boss Fergal O’Brien.

At Warwick, Alan Johns was again successful on the Tom Westontrained Coopers Square. This was the horse’s fourth win of the season under Johns, who is based with trainer Tim Vaughan in the Vale of Glamorgan.

At the same meeting, James Bowen took the bumper with Welsh Saint for his boss and current champion trainer Nicky Henderson. Welsh Saint, who was only having his third start under rules, is owned by Welsh owners Walters Plant Hire and The Potter Group. He looks to have a great future ahead of him.

Ffos Las next race on Sunday, April 7, which has a ‘Food and Drink Festival’ running alongside the racing.

There will be a range of stands selling Welsh produce, including Dark Matter Emporium, Eccentric Gin, Little Grandma’s Kitchen, The Pink Peppercorn, Afal y Graig, Marshmarloes and Coco Bean.

Tickets are £15 in advance with children aged 17 and under admitted free of charge. On the day, tickets are £20. A two-course meal in the restaurant is available at £50 per person.

The gates open at noon and the first race is off at 2pm. Car parking is free and there is a raceday bus from Llanelli Station.

There is also racing at Ffos Las on Easter Sunday. That is a Family Fun Raceday and there will be plenty of free entertainment on site for all the family.
