THE Stradey Sospans girls rugby team had a successful season’s launch, with more than 100 young players attending.

The first training session of the new term was held at the Llanelli Wanderers RFC ground, just yards from the site of the former Stradey Park.

Stradey Sospan spokesman Nigel Vena said: “Everyone had the opportunity to participate in training with their respective age groups. Afterwards, the girls spoke of the enjoyment and fun they had experienced.

“Our hosts, Llanelli Wanderers RFC, have been extremely supportive of our endeavours, allowing us total access to facilities and resources for training and match days.

“This is the fourth season for the Stradey Sospans and we start this season with a new Hub leadership, new committee and an increased number of coaches.

“The Welsh Rugby Union’s three-year trial for engaging girls has proved successful, engaging with approximately 70 children and young people each year, with ages ranging from 6 to 18.

“The groups for this season are under-7, under-9, under-11, under-13, under15, under-18 touch rugby and ladies’ touch rugby.

“Our plan is to encourage more girls to experience playing rugby, increasing their physical activity, learn new skills, make new friends with the additional benefit of joining a big friendly rugby family.”
