Hat-trick for Amir boosts Tata hopes

-

TATA Steel’s recent resurgence continued with a thumping 4510 home hammering of Newcastle Emlyn in the WRU National Championship.

Winger Amir Jiwa-Walji, who has played in the Principality Premiership, ran the show with a fine hat-trick, while Dai Griggs, Geraint Llewellyn and Jack Brooks all weighed in with tries.

Dan Guarneri kicked the rest of the points. Teifion Davies and Dan Davies hit back for Emlyn.

It was a fourth win on the bounce for Tata after six league losses on the spin before that. The return to form is timely, given they had slipped into the bottom four before beating Newbridge.

With four games remaining, Tata are fifth and have an eightpoint cushion from the drop zone.

Their next match is at home against Maesteg Quins – who are battling for their lives – next Wednesday.

Trebanos, who were not in action, return to the field on Saturday as they head to Rhydyfelin where a victory would help ease their relegation worries.

Newbridge have become the first side to be relegated from the Championship despite claiming a rare victory.

The Gwent outfit travelled to fellow strugglers Rhydyfelin and came away with a 20-18 victory, but that wasn’t enough to maintain their Championship status.

Matthew Davies and Luke Morgan crashed over for Newbridge. Eamonn Rees kicked two penalties and Sam Withers added two conversions.

The Village responded with tries from Chris Tottle and Luke Studley as well as eight points from Ross Lucas, which earned them a losing bonus point.

Rhydyfelin still have hopes of staying up as they are only seven points from safety with 15 points still up for grabs.

The other relegation positions are not yet confirmed although another defeat for Newcastle Emlyn kept them rooted to the bottom, nine points adrift with three games to play.

Maesteg Quins currently occupy the final position in the drop zone as they fell to a 16-11 defeat to Narberth, who moved into second place.

But the Quins still have five games left to play, including a home tie with Trebanos, who are just two points better off.

Beddau kept themselves away from the battle to avoid the drop as they beat Bedlinog 23-17 to stay in mid-table.

Lewis Egal and Jack Secher got tries. Hywel Chatham kicked two conversions and three penalties.

Bedlinog earned a losing bonus point thanks to four penalties from Dan Parry and a Tom Farrar-Evans touchdown.
