Swallows in last--4 shock

-

LLANDYSUL roared into the final of the Costcutter Easter Monday League Cup by turning the form book upside down in claiming a 4-2 semi-final win over league leaders St Dogmaels at Parc Emlyn.

Llandysul manager Gwynfor Edwards, who is also involved with the Wales Under-19 set-up, said: “Most neutrals did not give us a chance. But we played some lovely stuff during the second half and deserved the win. The lads are absolutely bouncing.”

Saints led 2-1 after the opening 45 minutes with goals by Louis Harding and Adam Williams, while Mathew Newbold netted for Llandysul, the chance created for him by a superb cross from Chris Harries.

It was an entirely different story during the second period as the Swallows equalised from a Dean Jones free-kick, went ahead through Jay Lynch and made sure of victory with an Ashley Summers strike. Llandysul meet Crannog in the final.

The division one title is on its way to St Dogmaels unless the league leaders suffer catastrophic results in their four remaining games.

Saints are six points ahead of Crannog, their only rivals for the title, with four games remaining, while the Llangrannog side have only two and a far inferior goal difference.

The champions-elect host Llandysul this Saturday, and are away against Aberaeron Reserves and Lampeter Town before a home game against Crannog.

A 3-2 win over visitors Llanboidy virtually wrapped up the title for Jason Williams and his team-mates who have been playing twice a week for the past month and are in action again when taking on Crannog in a Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies semi-final tie at Newcastle Emlyn.

The final scoreline at School Field did not give a true reflection of a game controlled by the hosts who hit the woodwork on three occasions and missed a penalty.

Skipper Williams opened the scoring when tapping home a Craig Williams cross, frontrunner Peter Almond got the second from the penalty spot and later missed a spot-kick, while the third Saints goal came from Rhys Jones who lobbed the goalkeeper after being put through by midfielder Adam Williams.

Crannog ensured that the leaders could not celebrate a league title at the weekend by emerging 6-0 winners over visitors Aberaeron Reserves.

John Lumb, who the previous Saturday got four tries for Cardigan Rugby Club, led the way with a hat-trick. The other marksmen were Rhys Davies with two and Robbie Evans.
