THE seniors’ summer season at Derllys Court Golf Club started with the captain’s handover and an 18-hole stableford competition.

This season there will be more prizes at stake as the seniors move to a threedivision handicap format. In the lowest division, three players tied on 48 points, Graham Owens taking top spot on countback from Paul Gibbs, with Nick Argue third.

In division two, Chris Palmer took first place with 47 points, with Dave Wood three behind in second.

The third division also saw three players tied on 48 points, with Chris Evans, Rob Lewis and Elwyn Roderick finishing in that order.

There was also a string of twos as Owens, Nick Argue, Roger Horsfall, Martin Davies, Paul Gibbs, Huw Hafod Jones and Winston John all benefited on the second and fifth holes.

The opening week finished with Phil Jones handing over the captaincy to Tony Wood, with Hugh Thomas coming in as the new vice-captain. As one of the final acts of his year, Jones passed a cheque for £2,100 to Ken Jones from the West Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group.

When added to the £9,400 collected jointly by the club’s men’s and ladies’ sections, on behalf of the Carmarthen Oncology Department and Brain Tumour respectively, over the past 12 months the club has raised £11,500 in total for local charities.
