Classic win, while Hartley leads his side to victory

-

THE seniors’ summer season at Derllys Court Golf Club got into full swing with a team-of-three competition and the first round of the South Wales Seniors Classic a few days later.

In the team competition, the best score counted on the first hole with two scores on the second and three on the third repeated over the 18 holes.

John Hartley led his team of Tom Thomas and Winston John to a convincing victory with a total of 83 stableford points. A fine round from Graham Parry helped him and teammates Steve Hughes and Les Burgoyne take second place with a splendid score of 79, pushing Phil Pickersgill, Ninian Davies and Clive Jones into third by just two points.

Twos for Hartley, Rob Lewis and Ian Robertson completed the prizewinning for the day.

Later in the week, the seniors’ B team welcomed Pontardawe for the opening match of the Seniors Classic. In the opening match, Graham Bebb and Phil Mountjoy got off to a slow start and soon found themselves on the back foot, before recovering to 1 down at the turn, only to eventually lose 3&2.

In both the remaining matches, early leads for Nicky Goldsmith and Colin Walters and captain Tony Wood and Chris Palmer began to slip away as the visitors found their form.

Throughout a tense final few holes, the hosts managed to retain the slimmest of leads in both matches to hang on to 1 up victories, and secure a winning result by two matches to one.

This week sees the seniors playing an individual stableford event, with the A team visiting Machynys for a tough opener to launch their Seniors Classic season.
