Phillips: Sardis Road victory has silenced the doubters
CARMARTHEN Quins coach Emyr Phillips said his team had silenced the doubters after they hammered Pontypridd.
The West Walians produced a clinical display at Sardis Road as wing Dylan Morgans ended with a brace of tries in a bonus-point success.
“I’m really chuffed. The boys have worked really hard this week and people have been doubting us throughout the year so to come to a place like Pontypridd and win is huge,” Phillips said.
“As a coaching group, we’re confident that if we put our A game together we can beat anyone in this league.
“We’ve shown that by turning over Ebbw Vale and now Pontypridd.”
Former Scarlets hooker Phillips saw his team open the scoring from the boot of Jac Wilson and add their first try when Morgan Griffiths broke free on the left and passed back inside to full-back Dale Ford. Wilson converted to put his side 10-0 ahead.
Things went from bad to worse for Pontypridd when Quins winger Morgans chipped over the top and showed good pace to collect for an impressive score.
Pontypridd hit back before the break when Lewis Williams sold the defence a lovely dummy and converted his own try.
No. 8 Lewys Millin forced his way over from five yards to put Quins back in control at the beginning of the second half.
Alex Webber got a try back for Pontypridd on the hour mark as he showed quick feet to evade a couple of tackles and reached out to score, but Quins secured a try bonus point when Dominic Booth powered over from close range and Wilson converted.
There was still time for Morgans to score Quins’ fifth try in the final few minutes.
Pontypridd assistant coach Paul Matthews said: “When you make that many errors against a good Carmarthen Quins side you’re going to struggle and that’s exactly what happened.
“I felt we fell into the trap of trying to play too much at times. We got caught in the middle third and it didn’t come off.”
