Coach Evans sets his sights on picking up silverware

-

EUROS Evans was delighted with the manner of his side’s thrashing of Cross Keys and has set his sights on winning silverware next season.

A penalty try plus scores from Aaron Warren (2), Dafydd Land, Morgan Jones, Matthew Hughes and Carwyn Evans secured a bonus-point win for the hosts. Jack Maynard kicked six points.

Cross Keys scored three tries of their own courtesy of Damian Welch, Rory Budina and Josh Guy but are now 14 points off safety.

“I am pleased with how our season has gone but we are also a little disappointed because we set ourselves the target of winning silverware this season,” said Drovers head coach Evans.

“We’ve fallen just short but hopefully we can win some next season.

“I think we’ve made a lot of progress this campaign.

“We won’t win the league this time but we want to finish the season as strongly as we can so that we finish in the top four. It was a good performance against Cross Keys and we played some good rugby.”

A penalty try through their superior scrum and a terrific individual try from scrum-half Land gave the Drovers an early lead.

The visitors’ task became a lot tougher when Dragons centre Tiaan Loots was red-carded for punching Llandovery hooker Matthew Moore.

Cross Keys were struggling to cope with the width and pace Llandovery were putting on the ball and they scored their third try when Warren crossed in the far right-hand corner to give his side a 19-0 half-time lead.

Former Scarlets and Cardiff Blues lock Welch got a try for Keys before Jones extended Llandovery’s lead.

Full-back Hughes was next to cross as he finished a superb team try, with Evans then crossing late on.

Llandovery can still have a say in the title race as they host champions and league leaders Merthyr this evening.

And on Saturday they welcome in-form Carmarthen Quins, who have beaten Ebbw Vale and Pontypridd in their last two outings, to Church Bank for what promises to be an intriguing Towy Valley derby.

LLANDOVERY – Tries: Pen try, D Land, A Warren (2), M Jones, M Hughes, C Evans; Cons: J Maynard (3). CROSS KEYS – Tries: D Welch, R Budina, J Guy; Cons: J Botica (3).
