Carmarthen’s golfing seniors having a very busy time of it

-

IT’S been a busy week for Carmarthen Golf Club’s seniors.

The South Wales Classic preliminary round is under way and the Bs were first to play, and having had a very difficult draw away to Trefloyne GC they lost 2½-½.

Clive Evans & Haydn Harries secured an honourable half but both Adrian Thomas & Eurwyn Harries and Tony Jones & Gary Evans lost. The team will now play in the Bowl competition.

On Wednesday the A’s, last year’s winners of the competition, entertained South Pembs GC. It turned out to be a really close affair with all three Carmarthen pairs being down at some time in the round.

First out were Clive Thomas & Tim Harries, who after a good start found themselves two down at the turn, but some solid golf from the former saw them turn the match round and get a 2&1 win.

Classic captain Huw Rees partnered Nick Ingram and although down early they managed to get three up. Although their opponents pulled holes back here and there they held on to win 3&2.

Finally, the very experienced pairing of Ian Griffiths and Rodri Davies found themselves 3 down after 9 against very consistent opponents but they dug in and slowly edged their way back into the match and in the end it was a very honourable half, meaning the team were through to the next round 2½-½.

It was then the turn of the seniors team to entertain Neath GC, and although this year’s captain Rodri Davies, partnered by Jimmy Crawford, and vice-captain Huw Rees, partnered by Nick Ingram, were comfortably beaten, the rest of their team performed much better and there were wins for Tony Jones & Huw Michael 2up, Hywel Morris & Dennis Driscoll 2&1, Ken Gealy & Ray Sinden 2up, Fred Steel & Ian Ritchie 3&2, and the performance of the day by Ryan Bowen & Charles Maliphant with a 6&5 win.

Elwyn Morgan & George Laidlaw earned a hard-fought half, giving Carmarthen a 5½-2½ win.

The remainder of the seniors played in a Hackers Revenge competition and, keeping up the form of the previous week, the winners were Len Davies, Alan Williams and Clive Thomas with 174 points, well clear of Paul Bennet, Dafydd Williams and Mervin Lewis on 167 points. In third were Ian Griffiths, Chris Smith and Wynne Thomas on 156 points.
