MEDAL SUCCESS FOR YOUNG ACES
CARMARTHEN Harriers’ endurance runners have enjoyed another successful cross-country season in the renamed John H Collins Gwent Cross-Country League as they competed alongside many of the best Welsh and English athletes.
Thanks to top-half finishes and individual medals, the novice boys and girls and the under-13 boys and girls were rewarded for their efforts by securing end-of-season gold, silver and bronze medals.
Both boys’ categories were crowned champions by comfortable margins from their nearest rivals.
It rounded off another great winter season for the youngsters coached by the experienced Neil Thomas, David Toogood and Carol Jones.
Fixtures were held in Cardiff, Pembrey, Tredegar, Pontypool and Bristol between October and March and featured more than 1,000 athletes from clubs across South Wales and the South West of England.
Round two in November was staged at Pembrey Country Park near Llanelli. It was also the venue which welcomed the Welsh Athletics Road Relay Championships and the Welsh Athletics Cross Country Championships earlier in the season.
In addition, Macsen Toogood, Daniel Warrender, Alex Coles, Iwan Thomas and Frances Mackie picked up individual medals for finishing in the top five of their respective age groups.
Elsewhere, Liam Upton-Boorman, William Coles, Ifan Bowen, Zach Elvy, Frank Morgan, Ben Thomas, Jessica Norman, Ellie-May John, Amy Greatrick and Chloe Hale were in the top 10.
Members who were part of the winning teams were presented with their medal at a training session by club chairman Jake Morgan.
The athletes now look forward to the summer junior and senior track and field leagues and championships. It begins at Haverfordwest High School and at the under-17 and 20 Youth Development League in Swansea this weekend.
