Llanelli Star - - SPORT -

OPENING batsman and skipper John Curran got Llechryd off to a great start in the Pembroke County Cricket League with a brilliant century as the Teifisiders pulled off an eight-wicket away win over Hook in division two.

Having first use of a good batting strip, Hook made good progress, with Aled Phelps top-scoring with 54, which included eight boundaries. He was given excellent support by brother Jamie (46), while Craig Nutty weighed in with a breezy 43 in a total of 222-5 in 45 overs.

Seamers Graham Keen and James Betterley snapped up two wickets apiece.

In the visitors’ reply, Curran went after the bowling from the word go, stroking the ball to all points, and his side reached the target for the loss of two wickets. He was undefeated on 110, with John Lewis (46) and Rhys Beard (38no) the other major contributors as Llechryd banked 27 points.

On a damp Teifi Valley wicket Llechryd 2nds drew with their Hook counterparts in division four.

Having been put in, the visitors were dismissed for 119 in 38 overs and in reply Llechryd 2nds finished one run short of the target for the loss of eight wickets.

For Hook, David Petrie was top scorer with 31 and along with Robin Makepeace picked up three wickets.

In the Llechryd innings Tom Beard top-scored with 31 and took 3-10. Peter Gregory also took three wickets.
