Crucial conversion the difference as Lampeter clinch cup
LAMPETER Youth beat Aberystwyth Youth 12-10 in the Ceredigion Youth Cup final.
It was a tight battle, but Lampeter ran out narrow winners in a typically physical and frantic local derby.
Playing into the wind, Lampeter controlled the first 20 minutes, only to concede a soft score from a 22-metre restart in what proved to be a real momentum shift in proceedings, with Aberystwyth taking control of the game for the rest of the half. But they were thwarted by some fantastic last-ditch defence.
Trailing 5-0 at the break, Lampeter started the second half in fine style as they camped on Aberystwyth line and were rewarded when tight-head prop Guto Jones crashed over out wide to level the score.
For much of the next 20 minutes, both sides cancelled each other out until Lampeter were awarded a penalty which Osian Jones nailed into the corner and they drove over from the resulting line-out, with Jones picking up his second try of the evening.
In what proved to be a decisive act, he added the extras from out wide.
Back came Aberystwyth, scoring out wide to reduce the deficit to 12-10, but with the conversion missed, Lampeter managed to see out the last few minutes to claim a hard-fought win.
