Fancied Kidwelly given a wake-up call despite win

Llanelli Star - - ATHLETICS AND BOWLS -

THERE were no real surprises in the Carruthers Shield last weekend, although some clubs would probably agree that they need to improve their performance if they wish to progress in this competition.

Section 1 leaders Llangennech & Bryn played short-handed against Parc William and came away with a narrow victory. They will face last year’s section qualifiers Carmarthen at home in two weeks’ time.

Carmarthen opened with a big win against Tumble and now face two away matches at Parc William and Llangennech, needing to win both matches on difficult surfaces.

Dafen Welfare top Section 2 after a visit to Cross Hands and now face their most difficult match at Ammanford Park this weekend. Havelock recovered from last week’s loss at Dafen to beat Tybie at Llandybie, giving them an outside chance if they win their remaining games.

Sections 3, 4 and 5 all produced very tight matches. Pontarddulais opened their account with a four-shot win at Blue Anchor, Gorseinon overcame Llanelli by seven shots and Parc y Dre’s visit to Burry Port saw them win by just four shots.

Favourites Kidwelly Town did not have everything their own way in their opening game in Section 6 at home to Ty’rfran. Coming away with a 23-shot win, but failing to win on all rinks, will have been a little wake-up call to the league champions.

In the Llanelli & District Bowling League, there were just two matches. In the Premier division Graig Merthyr hosted Loughor with the visitors taking a two-shot victory and 11 of the 14 available points.

The division two match between Ammanford Town and Cwmaman saw an emphatic win for the home team
