THERE’S a mother and daughter team at the head of affairs at Llanelli Rural Council.

Councillor Sharen L Davies has been elected as the new chairwoman of Llanelli Rural Council for 2019-20.

She was installed at a ceremony at the council chamber at the Rural Council’s HQ in Vauxhall last night.

Outgoing chairwoman councillor Sian Caiach gave her valedictory address, picking out the highlights of a successful year in office, before handing over the chain of office to Councillor Davies.

It is the second time Councillor Davies has been elected chairwoman of the rural. The first occasion was in May, 2010.

Councillor Davies will be supported by her mother, councillor Tegwen Devichand, who was elected as the council’s new vice-chairwoman.

It is the first time in the council’s 45-year history that a mother and daughter have served in office together at the same time.

Councillor Davies said: “I’m looking forward to the year ahead a great deal, especially knowing my mother will be supporting me throughout the civic year in her capacity as vice-chairwoman.

“This means so much to both of us, and I’m sure it is something we shall both relish and enjoy. I take office at a time when there is much to look forward to.

“Over the next 12 months, the council will continue to focus on bringing about positive changes to help improve local wellbeing through its ambitious community development programme.

“I’ll be playing my part in this regard by supporting the council in extending its reach and influence in the local community.”

Councillor Davies is the Independent member for Dafen ward and was first elected to Llanelli Rural Council in 2004.

She also represents the Llwynhendy ward on Carmarthenshire County Council.
