Bronwydd slump to second loss as Llan get first win

-

TWO teams who had lost their opening fixture on the first day of the South Wales Cricket Association season met at Llangennech on Saturday where Bronwydd were the visitors for their division one clash.

In a changed team due to the overrunning rugby season, Bronwydd again lost the toss but the home team decided to bat first and were never really in command as the Bronwydd fielding, backed up by the bowlers, restricted Llangennech to only 124.

Opener Scott Lloyd top-scored with 30 from 127 deliveries. The wickets were shared among the bowlers, with Colin Tucker, Tom Gleeson, Matthew Vaughan and Dafydd Morgan taking two each.

The Bronwydd reply made a steady start and with decent contributions from Iwan Davies (33), Gareth John (18no) and James Cale (17) the small target should have been within reach, but it wasn’t the case as Matthew Jones (5-26) and Michael Jones (314) saw Llangennech skittle Bronwydd out for 110 and a 14-run win.

The pressures of league cricket were forgotten when Lawrenny were the visitors in the National Village Cup. Lawrenny elected to bat first but lost two wickets before the score had reached double figures.

Stand-in skipper Cale rotated his bowlers to good effect as wickets fell at regular intervals, with Tom Gleeson (2-4), Matthew Bagshaw (3-20) and James Dickson (2-12) doing damage. Owain Rees and Colin Tucker also took wickets as the visitors were all out for 88. Will Randall made 26.

Cale (24) and Dickson put on 53 for the first wicket. Jacob Jenkinson scored 20 from 21 balls and Bronwydd won by eight wickets with Dickson finishing on 35 not out.
