Volunteer’s dementia work recognised
A CARMARTHENSHIRE volunteer has collected a prestigious national Rotary award.
Jan Lewis was named as a Community Champion after being recognised by Rotary for the support she has given to people suffering from dementia and memory loss in her community.
The ceremony was held at Nottingham Council House as part of Rotary’s annual Conference.
Community Champions are part of Rotary’s Champions Awards, which are hosted each year to recognise the outstanding and inspirational humanitarian and community service of volunteers from around the country.
Mrs Lewis, from the organisation Ty Golau (House of Light), was nominated by Pembrey and Burry Port Rotary Club. Having recognised the growing need to provide support for those with all types and stages of memory loss including dementia, Mrs Lewis was determined to provide support.
Within a short time she had got a team together, negotiated the use of premises and prepared and delivered varied weekly programmes to visitors.
Mrs Lewis said: “I am so honoured to receive this prestigious award. As I love it so much It really is no hardship along with fantastic volunteers to facilitate this group.”
