GLORY DAY FOR DINEFWR ACES
YSGOL Bro Dinefwr defeated Cwm Rhymni 28-15 in the National Final of the Welsh Schools Rugby Union Plate at the Principality Stadium.
This was the first time in the school’s history that the first XV had reached a national final and they marked the occasion by scoring four magnificent tries in a brilliant victory.
Dinefwr had beaten Bryntawe, Gowerton, Dyffryn Taf and Olchfa in their march to the final and ran out at Cardiff with confidence high.
They scored an early try in the opening minutes from a driving lineout, man of the match Ben Evans burrowing over the line. After a positive start Dinefwr had to withstand a lot of pressure from Cwm Rhymni and went into the break 10-7 down.
But they rallied to score three tries in the second half.
The first try in the second period was scored by centre Oliver Cleverly, who rounded the defence and scorched over from 35 metres.
The next try was scored by No. 8 Owen Hall as he gathered an offload from captain Gruff Thomas and dived over the line. Dinefwr had to wait until the final play of the match to score their final try, scored by towering Callan Davies as he finished off an excellent team move. All four tries were converted by Oliver Weed.
WRU rugby hub officer Tomas Marks said: “For me as a coach, this team demonstrates the importance of giving opportunities and more time for players to develop.
“Over half the squad did not represent the district or the Scarlets in their lower years of school but they finish their school rugby careers as national winners and have left a lasting legacy at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr.”
