BRYNHYFRYD EDGE THROUGH

-

Carmarthen Athletic Under-16s finished their junior rugby in style at Parc y Scarlets by winning the Regional Cup final for the second season running. They beat Crymych 41-10 in the final thanks to a superb display of teamwork. Full-back Iwan Glynn stormed over for a hat-trick of tries, with Iestyn Richards crossing twice and Matthew Evans and Steff Jones also on the scoresheet. Glynn kicked two conversions and Tom Davies one. Pictured (back, from left) are Luke Micaleff, Kyle Baker, Matthew Evans, Tal Davies, Ioan Howells, Joseff Rhys Ellis, Gruff Giles, Elliot Burton, Steff Jones, Dylan Williams, Llyr Lewis, Jacob Davies, Iestyn Richards and Deian Morgan. FOUR of the six available places for Carmarthen County teams in the open draw for the Welsh Bowling Association National Club Championship were decided on Saturday afternoon.

Section 3 saw a short-handed Brynhyfryd visit Blue Anchor. Both teams had suffered relegation from the Llanelli & District League premier division last season so were well matched, and the result went Brynhyfryd’s way by a small margin.

They have finished the section unbeaten and progress to the next round.

Progressing from Section 4 are Loughor Bowls Club, again unbeaten, after a massive home victory against contenders Gorseinon in a winner-takes-all clash.

Dafen Welfare Crusaders were no match for premier division side Parc y Dre in Section 5, putting the People’s Park-based club through, and in the big clash at Parc Stephens the home side saw off Graig Merthyr in Section 6.

This leaves just two places to be decided.

Section 1 will see Carmarthen visit Llangennech & Bryn but a win for either team will still leave a question of qualification in the air as Carmarthen’s match at Parc William has yet to be played and the result of it, or its abandonment, will have a major effect in deciding who goes through.

Havelock Park stayed in the hunt for the final place on Saturday when they beat Ammanford Park at home.

As it stands, Dafen Welfare, having played all their matches, lead the table. Ammanford Park, with a greater shot difference, will overtake them if they beat Tybie at Llandybie this weekend.

Havelock have a home match against Cross Hands and, on current form, could overtake both if the win by a large enough margin.

This weekend also sees the main start of the Llanelli & District Bowling League.
