Harries takes cup as course provides a stern test

-

TOUGH conditions lay in wait for the seniors of Carmarthen Golf Club as they contested the Glyn Knight Cup.

The course was hard and there was speed in the greens, meaning scoring was not easy. And this was reflected in the results.

In division 1 (handicap up to 15.4) the winner was Jeff Harries with 37 points.

In second was Peter Williams with 36 and in third was Gary Evans with 34.

The division 2 (handicap 15.5-19.4) winner was Elwyn Williams with 36 points followed by the ever-consistent Alan Edwards (35) and Jimmy Crawford with 33.

In Division 3 (handicap 19.5+) the winner was Phil Webb with 37 points. But his back nine was not as good as Harries’s and it was the division one man who took the cup.

Second in this division was Mervyn Lewis with 36 points and Tom Lester was third with 34.

Surprisingly, only two twos were recorded — by Gary Evans and Meirion Griffiths.

The seniors travel to Glynhir on Wednesday followed by WL Davies 1 on Thursday. This competition is made up of three legs, with the winner being the player with the best aggregate score over two of those rounds.

A number of the club’s seniors travelled to Swansea and entered the Langland Bay seniors individual stableford open event.

Ken Gealy came first in the over70s category with a score of 35 points and Ray Sinden came second with 34.
