We are never forgotten about

We are never alone, discarded or forgotten by the creator of the universe, says David Jones

A RECENT magazine suggested that a long soak in a hot bath could make you feel less lonely and can relax both body and mind. According to the article the hot water can act as a substitute for company and can dispel feelings of isolation and exclusion.

That was the experience of 400 volunteers who kept a diary of their bathing habits of how they felt before and after they had enjoyed a long and luxurious time in the bath.

There is, of course, something very therapeutic in a hot bath and historically people made their ways to the various bath spas all over the country to benefit from their medicinal and healing processes.

So there may be something in it after all.

We all look for comfort and assurance, especially at times when loneliness knocks on our door.

I officiated at the funeral recently of a lady who had chosen in part to live quite a reclusive life.

She had long ago lost contact with any remaining family and life had not been easy for her.

While there were not many at her funeral, those who were there counted her a friend and the lovely tribute one of her neighbours gave was both moving and filled with warmth and friendship.

By the power of the Person of the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost, which we celebrate this Sunday, God’s presence is always with us, warming our hearts to the truth of his love and surrounding us with the gentle comfort of his peace.

The Holy Spirit came upon the gathered Apostles like a rushing wind which enabled and empowered them to preach the Gospel to the amazement of the people of Jerusalem.

This same Gospel of grace and forgiveness is preached to this very day bringing hope and peace to all who will receive God’s love.

The Spirit is also the ‘Comforter’ giving us the assurance that whatever life brings God is with us. We are never alone, discarded or forgotten by the creator of the universe who Jesus told us is our Father. ‘Why then’ asks the Psalmist, ‘am I so sad? I shall put my hope in God and keep praising him, my Saviour and my God. Holy Spirit of God, as powerful as the wind and as gentle as the dove.
