Youth council is up for three awards

CARMARTHENSHIRE Youth Council has been shortlisted for some prestigious awards.

The council is up for three awards including Outstanding Youth Work Project – Promoting Young People’s Rights at the Youth Work Excellence Awards 2019.

Council member Amber Treharne has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Individual – Making a Difference Award and Sarah Powell for the Outstanding Individual – Outstanding Youth Worker Award.

Carmarthenshire Youth Council (CYC) was set up in September 2003 to act as a voice by representing the views and opinions of all young people in the county.

Its main aim is to bring about positive change, development and create opportunities for young people to become involved in decision making/democratic processes within the authority, and at national and international level.

Young people aged 11 to 25 are elected on to the CYC through schools, colleges, youth clubs, voluntary youth groups, youth action groups, special interest groups, disability groups, other specialist or minority formal and informal groups.

Councillor Glynog Davies, executive board member for education and children’s services, said: “Members of Carmarthenshire Youth Council do some fantastic work and it’s great to see it being recognised in this way.

“I wish them all the very best for the awards night.”

The awards evening will take place on June 28 at the Quay Hotel, Deganwy, Conwy.

CYC chairperson Brittany Alsop-Bingham said: “I am extremely proud of all members of the youth council for being shortlisted for the award for our work promoting children’s rights and striving to ensure young people are listened to.

“By being shortlisted, hopefully the youth council can promote the excellent work we do on a wider scale and more young people will have their voices heard.

“I’m delighted that I will be one of the young people who will be up in North Wales at the ceremony on the council’s behalf.”
