Jones takes command thanks to fine first round

-

TONY Jones led the way in division one as Carmarthen Golf Club Seniors played the first round of the WL Davies Cup.

Jones recorded 37 points, followed by Graham Williams on 36 and Tim Harries on 34.

Coming out on top in division two was Alan Edwards with 38 points. Chris Smith was second with 34 and in third was Rob Thomas with 32.

The division 3 winner was Martin Phillips with 40 points followed by Ryan Bowen on 36 and George Laidlaw on 34, with the next two rounds to be played over the next few months.

Section treasurer Ray Sinden again had a big smile on his face as only two twos were recorded, by Tony Jones and Martin Phillips.

There were differing emotions for the two teams in the South Wales Classic, with both having received difficult away draws.

In the cup, the A team travelled to Llanishen in Cardiff, and although they fought valiantly, local knowledge proved key as Carmarthen suffered a 2-1 defeat.

Tim Harries and Clive Thomas lost 2&1, captain Huw Rees and club captain Fred Steel earned an excellent win on the last, but Rhodri Davies and Ian Griffiths went down 4&3.

However, in the Bowl the B team travelled to neighbours Glynhir and after a very tight match recorded an outstanding 3-0 win.

Peter Williams and Alan Lewis won 2&1, with Tony Lloyd Jones and Gary Evans and captain Clive Evans, partnered by Haydn Harries, both taking the spoils on the last green.
