MP was treated to a display of robot technology when visiting chemist

-

LLANELLI’S MP was treated to a display of robot technology on a visit to Evans Chemist at Ty Elli Surgery on Friday.

Nia Griffith MP said: “It was fascinating to see robot technology loading pharmaceutical deliveries onto shelves at Evans Chemist.

“The machines were also finding and collecting the required items from the shelves to meet each prescription, which were then checked by qualified staff.

“It reminded me of the former R.N. (MoD) Stores in Llangennech, where it was people, not robots, who went up on chair lifts some 20 feet to retrieve documents.

“It is mind-blowing and somewhat frightening how technology is transforming our workplaces. The key will be how to harness such technology to improve accuracy and reduce drudgery, but retain the vital human touch which is the lifeblood of our communities – and Evans Chemist is a good example of how this can work”

Mo Nazemi, manager of Evans Pharmacy, added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Nia Griffith MP to Ty Elli pharmacy, and to show her how our robot assists in dealing with the volume and accuracy of the dispensing process.

“Automation has added real value to a thriving community pharmacy practice, complementing existing jobs and delivering an improved service to users of the NHS in the town centre.

“Keeping modern, accessible community pharmacy services in Llanelli is a vital part of the vibrancy of the high street.”

Russell Goodway, chief executive of Community Pharmacy Wales, said: “Community pharmacy has seen significant sustained investment and prioritisation from the Welsh Government, which has enabled community pharmacists across Wales to invest in new technologies and new services.

“Not only does this help reduce the burden on GPs and out-of-hours care, but it provides a variety of basic health services in a convenient drop-in location.”
