Early Davies onslaught enough for victory

-

YOUNG Llanelli boxer Finley Davies claimed victory over Bernie McDonagh in an entertaining bout at Pyle RFC.

It was a contrast in styles as Davies, a tall and rangy 14-year-old from Trostre ABC, faced his short and stocky opponent from the Afan Spartans Club in a 64kg contest.

The two boys came out quickly at the first bell, and it was Davies who opened the scoring with two long, powerful left jabs which stopped McDonagh in his tracks.

Davies continued to make good use of his jab before letting go with following straight rights.

McDonagh showed spirit, but a lot of his counter punches fell short with only the occasional scoring shot.

Davies came out even more aggressively for the second round and produced several sustained two-fisted attacks. Cardigan and District Pool League champions Peter Almond and Gary Murtagh (left) with runners-up Jamie Bowen and Chris Truslove.

His opponent was under heavy pressure, but he did well to survive and fight back in what was a one-sided round for the Trostre boxer.

After the pace set by Davies in the first two rounds it was not surprising that the last round was fought with slightly less intensity, Davies’s attacks being less frequent.

But they were effective enough to confirm a clear points win for the Llanelli boy.
