Wood and Thomas put seniors on the right track

-

HEAVY rain forced the postponement of the fourth round of the Dawn Patrol League at Derllys Court Golf Club, so the main seniors’ event of the week was a return home team match against Haverfordwest.

After a heavy defeat in the away fixture, another tough match was expected. And so it proved when captain Tony Wood and partner Idwal Thomas earned a hard-fought 2up win in the first match.

Two more good results came next as Hugh Thomas and Meirion Evans (5&4) and Graham Bebb and Barry Davies (4&2) built up a 3-0 lead for the hosts, before a half from Nicky Goldsmith and Ninian Davies followed by a narrow defeat for Alan Hire and Phil Rogers (1 down), gave the visitors some hope of a comeback.

However, the in-form Winston John and partner Tom Thomas ensured a home win with a comprehensive 5&3 win.

A defeat for Brian Newcombe and John Phillips and a halved match for Phil Jones and Nick Argue completed the scoring to give the home team a narrow 5-3 victory.

With a break from team matches this week, the seniors will be hoping for better weather when the rearranged fourth round of the Dawn Patrol League is played.
