Cheers for Beer! Adam picks up top award
LLANELLI Athletics Club star Adam Beer is the latest recipient of the Gerry Batty Memorial Trophy.
The award is given on an annual basis by the West Wales Regional Athletics Council committee.
It is awarded for the most improved junior athlete in West Wales over the previous year. It was won by Ben Thomas of Ysgol y Strade in 2018 and the council was impressed with the number and quality of nominations received this year.
Beer’s achievements in 2017-18 saw the Ysgol Glan y Môr pupil win the Welsh Schools Cross Country in Brecon, before he finished seventh for Wales at SIAB in Nottingham.
On the track he continued to make drastic improvements, culminating in breaking Dewi Griffiths’s 1500m record in Carmarthen and then break the 3000m track record in Swansea at under-15 level.
He broke club records at Llanelli AAC in the 800m and 3000m.
This year’s award was presented to Beer at the West Wales Outdoor Track and Field Athletics Championships in Swansea by West Wales chairman Dr Hedydd Davies.
Other award winners over the years include athletes such as Swansea Harriers’ Joe Brier and Dewi Griffiths, who began their running career in Johnstown.
