Narrow defeat puts an end to Kidwelly Shield challenge

Llanelli Star - - RACING AND BOWLS -

THERE were mixed fortunes for Carmarthenshire teams playing in the open draw of bowls’ Welsh National Club Championship.

Llanelli League champions Kidwelly Town came unstuck at home, losing by two shots to Caerau Welfare.

Ammanford Park and Brynhyfryd both suffered defeats by their 2018 opponents Saundersfoot and Harlequins.

On the brighter side, Loughor beat Windsor Penarth by 11 shots and Parc y Dre came away from Briton Ferry Steel 14 shots to the good.

In Carmarthen the visitors were Presteigne, who had lost to the home side by two shots last year.

In what was another closely contested match, Carmarthen emerged winners again by a single shot.

Second-round matches will be played a week on Saturday when Loughor host 2018 finalists RTB Ebbw Vale. Carmarthen and Parc y Dre meet at St Peter’s in a repeat of last year’s second-round clash, which the Llanelli side won by 11 shots.

In the Llanelli and District Bowling League, the Premier division lead changed hands in midweek when Kidwelly Town took maximum points from Ammanford Park.

But on Saturday Graig Merthyr went back to the top after a lastgasp home win at the expense of struggling Llanelli.

Dafen Welfare kept their place at the top of division one following a midweek success at Pontarddulais.

But they are being closely pursued by Calsonic Wanderers, who beat Dafen on Saturday, and Burry Port, who notched up consecutive victories last week.

Cross Hands took over at the top of division two with two victories and remain unbeaten this year, as are second-placed Tybie.
