Llan win to storm clear at the top

Llanelli Star - - CRICKET -

THERE is just no stopping Llangennech in the All Wales Sport Midweek League.

They defeated Gowerton by six wickets to draw 37 points clear of the rest of the field at the halfway stage of the season.

After restricting Gowerton to 134-6 off 20 overs, David Williams, with three sixes and four boundaries in his 62 not out, and Hedd Wyn Jones (30) helped Llangennech knock off the runs.

For Gowerton, Luke Main scored 51 not out, an innings that included five sixes and four fours.

He received good support from Matthew Mason (35).

Although the title may already be out of reach for the chasing pack, there is still plenty to play for as the top four clubs at the end of the season qualify for the semi-finals of the Bowl competition.

And Gorseinon boosted their chance of making it through, climbing into second place in the table following a fine 27-run win against Llanelli at Stradey Park.

Despite losing the prized wicket of Greg Fisher, caught by Osian Evans off the bowling of Daniel Lewis for nine early in proceedings, Gorseinon recovered to 131-3 off 20 overs, helped by a solid 63 not out from Daniel Allen.

His knock included seven boundaries, and he was well supported by Haroon Ali with 25 not out.

It was tough going for the Llanelli bowlers. The only wicket-takers were Daniel Lewis (1-16) and Joshua Williams (1-19). Rhys Matthews was run out for 21.

Llanelli lost early wickets in pursuit of the runs and, left with a mountain to climb, the effort fell short on 104-5.

Opener Jac Rees was bowled by Haroon Ali for one, while his partner Ryan Nicholas fell in the same way to Tom Parkin for three.

Morgan Jones looked as if he could make an impact but was caught by Greg Fisher off the bowling of Ali Humayun for nine.

Rhys Westcott with 20 not out and Robert Thomas (14) did their best to recover the situation but were left with too much to do.

Gorseinon’s Muneeb Zafar claimed 2-8, Tom Parkin 1-5 and Haroon Ali 1-7.

Meanwhile, Pontarddulais eased to an impressive victory over Dafen. They restricted Dafen to 144-5, then reached the target for the loss of just three wickets.
