Rees is star of the show against weakened Bronwydd

Llanelli Star - - CRICKET -

BRONWYDD’S trip to Stradey Park to face a Llanelli team who were in the Premier League last season was always going to be a tough task.

And with three of their regular players unavailable, this proved to be the case as the home side eased home by eight wickets.

Bronwydd skipper Oli Furneaux won the toss and elected to bat first, but the visitors were soon in trouble when James Dickson was adjudged lbw with only four on the board.

Iwan Davies, promoted up the order, scored a fluent 58 but wickets fell at the other end and only Furneaux (22), Carwyn Jones (17) and Tom Gleeson (15) made contributions.

The final total of 144 was unlikely to provide a real test for the Llanelli batting line-up.

Llanelli opening bowler Steve Devonald ended with figures of 3-14 off 8.4 overs, with Iwan Rees taking 3-40.

Aled Gilley chipped in with 2-29. The Llanelli reply was dominated by Rees, who struck 12 boundaries in his 75 to complete a fine all-round match before he was dismissed by Llanelli opener Ioan Phillips in action against visitors Bronwydd. Picture: Phil Davies. Callum Collins-Davies.

And with Craig Howells remaining unbeaten on 37, victory went the way of the home team after only 30 overs.

Tom Gleeson was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 1-17 off nine overs, but the small target gave the other bowlers little room for error.

Bronwydd entertain Gowerton on Saturday.
