AS Ffos Las Raceourse celebrates its 10th anniversary, we’ve compiled 10 facts you probably didn’t know about the racing, equestrian sports and conferencing venue which is based in Trimsaran, just 13 miles from Llanelli.

1. Ffos Las was the first National Hunt racecourse to be built in the UK for 80 years
2. The racecourse was built at a cost of approximately £20million
3. The racecourse site is 600 acres (2.4km2)
4. Ffos Las was originally named after the farm that once occupied the site
5. The translation of Ffos Las to English is known as ‘ blue ditch’
6. The racecourse was built at the site of an open cast coal mine after mining ceased
7. The first ever flat race at Ffos Las was dedicated to Llanelli schoolboy and aspiring jockey, Jamie Yeates, who had died under tragic circumstances the previous February
8. Cerys Matthews, Jason Donovan, Blue and Madness have played at Ffos Las
9. The racecourse site boasts conservation areas, solar farms, lakes, bridleways and a tree plantation
10. The Grandstand at Ffos Las is named after Welsh rugby legend, Jonathan Davies, who is from the local village and worked on the open cast mine
