THOMAS MAKES WIZARDS MOVE

-

FLYHALF Aled Thomas has left Carmarthen Quins.

The former Scarlets ace has made the move to Principality Premiership rivals Aberavon.

Thomas has been one of the best fly-half operators in Welsh club rugby’s top flight in the last few seasons, with his ability to orchestrate matters behind the scrum matched by his excellent goal-kicking.

His departure will leave a void at the Quins, especially as he also filled the role of backs coach.

Thomas said: “Following finishing full time, I really enjoyed my time at the Quins as player-coach. There are some great guys down there and hopefully I helped improve things on and off the field.

“However, I felt like I needed a new challenge and Aberavon are a very ambitious club with a great ethos and reputation for being a good place to be.

“I know a few of the boys down there so it seemed like a very good fit.”

Thomas is one of the most experienced players in the Premiership, having enjoyed three spells with the Scarlets.

The 34-year-old has also played for the Dragons and in the English Premiership with Gloucester before returning to West Wales.

He also scored the winning try for Wales Sevens in the memorable 2009 World Cup final success against Argentina.

He added: “I am looking forward to working with James Garland, who is a really good experienced outside-half, so if we can both drive the team forward then we should be able to push for top three in the league.

“I think I can add tempo to the game as I know the players like to play an upbeat game.

“I will be able to distribute, threaten the line and kick my goals to help the team move forward.”

Ambitious Aberavon have made a number of summer signings as the Talbot Athletic Ground outfit look to make a mark on the new slimmeddown Premiership.

Wizards head coach Jason Hyatt said: “Aled will add valuable experience and together with James Garland we have two 10s who know how to bring the best out of a team as well as individuals.”
