NEW KINDLE OASIS

AMAZON just can’t stand still these days – new products are its hardware division at an incredible rate, and every one, it seems, is a winner.

This week it’s the new high-end model of the Kindle Oasis.

Starting at £229.99, for a version with just wi-fi and 8gb of storage, it can’t really be described as the best-value Kindle – but that’s not really the point – Amazon has set out make a premium product here, and it shows.

It comes in graphite or gold with a tough, waterproof, yet light, aluminium body.

The 7in screen has a crisp, print-like, 300ppi display, and for the first time, an adjustable warm light that you can vary between bright white and amber for more comfortable reading in dark environments.

As with all Kindles, the selection of books available is unparalleled. There’s also access to the Amazon-owned Audible audio book collection, and seamless switching between reading and listening is possible.

It’s a marvellous package that keeps getting better, and if you really love your Kindle you might just consider the price a triviality.

ADOBE FRESCO

ADOBE is publisher of the mighty Photoshop, among other incredible apps. Its size and focus, though, has made it a little slow on the uptake when it comes to making apps for Apple’s world-beating iPad – particularly now the iPad Pro packs such power and versatility.

There are already apps that can do more or less what Photoshop does, so Adobe is playing catch-up a little this year.

Photoshop is due to arrive for iPad sooner or later this year, and it was revealed this week that a new painting and drawing app called Fresco is also in the works.

It is novel because, Adobe says, it more accurately reflects the ways in which ink and paint interact with each other on paper.

It looks great, though the iPad Procreate app will not give up its crown easily.

No firm release date or pricing has yet been announced.
